I know… I know… The Tulsa run was over months ago.

But some people are interested in reading more about the Tulsa Run and this posting is just for those who might be interested in reading about Tulsa Runs of the past. So I’m including links of previous races including the Bedlam Challenge, celebrity runners, and running poetry.

These three guys went the distance–Jim, Mike, and Russel. Jim and Mike’s photos were taken before the 31st annual Tulsa Run. Russel’s was taken after finishing the race.

You did it Jim. By the way, kudos to Jim for making first place in the men’s clydesdale category 230 pounds.

Mike told me this was the longest distance he has ever run. Way to go Mike!

Good job Russel. Three cheers for Jim, Mike, and Russel.

Tulsa Run Costume Photos

Winner or not, it was worth the time and effort to run the Tulsa Run this year just to see the costume parade.

Well….

It wasn’t really a parade, but it was fun to watch.

I only managed to get two costume photos. Hope you get a kick out of these two pictures. Actually, there are two people missing from the first photograph. Roman and Debra were part of the Ken/Kathy boxing scene, but I didn’t manage to get them in the photos. Maybe next time….

Tulsa Run 2008

We had a lot of fun today. Many from our Runner’s World Tulsa training group ran the 15K Tulsa Run.

In one of Coach Kathy’s ezines she wrote, “So who is going to join me for our little costume parade? I think it is great fun and it IS almost Halloween. Besides, I don’t want to hog all the spotlight. So whadda ya say, don your tiaras, paint your faces and go a little wild.”

Kathy dressed as Rocky Balboa, Roman was the referee, and Ken was the ring girl/cheerleader. They really did steal the spotlight. Ken was hilarious with his poses to match his costume. There was also a group of women dressed in ’50s outfits, and some women really did don their tiaras.

It was also good to see Angela and her mother, Mike, Gayle, Stephanie, Russel, Jim (Dylan’s dad), Kristin, and Ronit.

Of all the people I saw today, I was hoping to see Mona Canady and Olga Crutcher. I didn’t see either one of them.

My finishing time was (00:01:07) one minute seven seconds chip time faster than last year. It was a PR for the new millenium but I ran it much faster in 1988 and 1989.

I’ll post photos in a day or two.

Silver and Gold – Senior Olympics

Just to answer everyone’s questions!

I came home from the Oklahoma Senior Olympic games with three gold medals, three silver medals, and no bronze–a total of 7. The Olympic gold medals are real gold, but the Senior Olympic Gold medals are only gold in color. It’s not the value of the medal that’s important, but the effort that it took to win the medal.

On Friday morning, I ran the 5k and earned my first gold medal.

Later that day, I competed in the weight lifting events and walked away with silver medals in the bench press, bicep curl, leg press, and push-ups.

Then on Saturday, the track and field events were to be held at Putnam City School. It rained most of the day and there were even a few down pours. The long jump, high jump, triple jump, polevault, and hammer throw events were all cancelled because of the rain. Those events will be rescheduled.

They did continue with the track events though and I took gold in both the 50 Meter dash, and the 200 Meter dash.

I’ll post more general information later this week.

I want to thank all those who sent positive thoughts and prayers my way during the three days I was in Oklahoma City for the various competition events.

Btw, this is a qualifying year for the National Senior Olympics and I made it! I qualified!

Weightlifting isn’t offered at the national level, but I’ll run track and the 5k in Palo Alto, California next year.

I’m also hoping to qualify in the high jump.

It Rained on My Parade

Yesterday’s long run was slated for 7-9 miles. About 4 miles into it, the rain started coming down, and I called it quits.

I guess quitting because of the rain was just an excuse. I think it was really due to the fact that I had only slept for two hours the night before.

On Friday night I went to bed at 11pm and planned to arise at 4:30am, which would have given me a good 5 1/2 hour sleep–or so I thought.

My teenage grandson woke me up at about midnight to tell me something. It was okay because I was able to go back to sleep. Then about 12:30 the phone rang and I was still able to go back to sleep. At 1:00am the phone rang again and my sleep was totally interupted. I laid there until 1:30 tossing and turning, so decided to get up. Hence, my two hour sleep.

I was up for the rest of the night and by the time our 5:45am run started, I had already been awake and piddling around the house for over four hours.

I’ve run the Tulsa Run six times–1988, 1989, 2003, 3004, 2006, 2007. Yesterday’s training run included part of the Tulsa Run which includes a lot of incline. You would think that I’d be used to the rolling hills, but the lack of sleep had me dragging butt and panting as if it were my first time doing hills. So by the time the rain came, I found it to be a good excuse to quit.

I’m not a quitter! Honest! But lack of sleep will do strange things to the mind.

BTW, the rain was just a sprinkle that lasted about 20-30 minutes. Everyone else was loving it. A quote from the Runners World Tulsa blog, “Oh so good was the cool fall morning in which we ran 9 miles mostly on the Tulsa Run course. A little rain spattered us along the way and it was good training as they won’t do a rain delay on race day either!”

I won’t be able to run with the group next Saturday because I’ll be competing in the Oklahoma Senior Olympics. I’ll be running the 50 meter track, the 200 meter track, and the 5K road race.

Somehow I’ll have to make up the distance I missed today.

Keep good thoughts and prayers for me next Saturday.
